Here at the Washington Health Foundation, Healthy Living combined with Healthy Systems has always been the recipe for the success of the Healthiest State in the Nation Campaign. We believe we need both individual responsibility and collective action to truly improve health for the people of Washington. It seems that people in the other Washington are getting this message too: students at Thurgood Marshall Academy recently participated in an exercise program organized by teacher Annie Scogin, and presented by coaches from District Crossfit.
“One push-up is hard,” says Annie Scogin, the teacher who brought the coaches here. “One squat is hard. Life is hard. I hope that’s something they get out of this — that if it hurts, that’s okay. At the end of the workout, I want to see smiles. Tired, panting smiles.”
Thurgood Marshall is located in Ward 8, which has the highest rates of obesity in a school district where 19 percent of high-school-age boys and 16 percent of high-school-age girls are obese. Rather than placing blame on parents, and the food industry, teachers at Thurgood Marshall decided to put a system in place to get kids moving, and to provide education on good nutrition. They built a new gym, and provide free, nutritious breakfasts and lunches through the D.C. Farm to School Network.
Congratulations to Thurgood Marshall Academy. Another great example of what can happen when people work together to implement healthy systems and healthy living to improve lives. From our Washington to yours, nice work!
This is really the great way you discuss this kind of topic. Good job.
