By Kate Forand, RN/AmeriCorps Rural Health Promoter at Garfield County Hospital District in Pomeroy, WA
October marks the start of not just one, but two seasons: fall and flu! Keeping our community healthy and immunized remains our top priority and the Health Home committee at Garfield County Hospital District has worked towards ensuring we make this happen. That’s why we decided to embark on a flu shot campaign with convenience in mind. Susie Bowles, LPN/Community Care Coordinator, and I took to the streets of Pomeroy and coordinated with local business to immunize employees and their families at their workplace. In addition, we also scheduled two community flu shot clinics at the Garfield County Senior Center.
Those who participated by getting their flu shot also received a goodie bag filled with hand sanitizer, tissues, and brochures on staying healthy during the cold and flu season and Health Home. Overall, the response was overwhelmingly positive and well received. Businesses that participated included the Post Office, Pomeroy Grange Supply, US Bank, the WSU extension center, and the court house. In total the team immunized 44 individuals and we’re still going! We anticipate connecting with more businesses in the coming weeks and continuing this service for our community.

Way to go Kate, keep up the good work.

For those not in the Pomeroy area...I got my flu shot at not cost from my daughters' school. You could check with your local school district if you don't have a fabulous, roving Kate near you! Thanks for doing such a great job Kate! You're making us all look good!

I'm one of the biggest advocates for flu shot ! :) In general I'm a very "sickly" person, I lack vitamins, am pretty weak and I used to get sick every winter at least 2-3 times (I couldn't leave the house for more than 4 days each time). Started taking the flu shoot every winter, 5 years ago, and since then I almost never get the flu! So I say Yes to the flu shot!
